Fall Styles Already in Stores

August 3rd, 2011 -

It’s only August 3rd but fall styles are showing up everywhere and being promoted with sales. I recently took a trip to a local H&M to find a lot of heavier fabrics and fall colors in stock. It’s the perfect time to get your ensemble ready for after Labor Day. Here’s a look at some major trends that have been popping up, ready to fly off the shelves:

  • Orange. Yes, it was big already this spring and fall, but that was brighter iterations of it. For the fall, it’s more a pumpkin orange and it’s everywhere. A wool orange skirt on orange blazer would be the perfect addition to your outfit and make you stand out. Pair it with less bold colors and make it the only orange piece in the outfit so you don’t look like a big pumpkin.
  • Knit dresses. Knit, comfy dresses with simple designs and  shape are really in and popping up everywhere. You can be comfortable and look feminine too and that’s definitely the point of these designs.
  • Lace. Big last fall and making a comeback in very feminine, flirty ways. Think more of a soft look, not sexy lingerie lace but pink and white lace with a more modest feel.
  • Ruffles. Ruffle dresses, ruffle tops, even shoes with ruffles. It’s everywhere as an extra bit of pizzazz. Some women don’t like the look but if you like trying new and bolder things, go for it!

The All-Important Pants Roll

The All-Important Pants RollIn 2nd  grade it was all about pegging one’s pants properly. In the ‘80s, it was called the “French roll.” Then later, we learned about rolling pants as a way of communicating whether one was interested in buying or selling drugs in the urban environment.

Now the high-water look is back, not for classroom popularity or less-than-legal purchases, but for high fashion! This masculine shabby chic style is currently being sported by trendsetting ankles from Silverlake in LA to Bushwick in NYC.

Style arbiter Jim Moore, GQ’s creative director, urges that the roll should look somewhat unintentional. “Consider how Johnny Depp might roll his pants.”

The look is likely attributable to  1. the ongoing style romance with a slightly impoverished look, in which one imitates the togs of an artist squatting in a loft in an abandoned factory and separated into different “rooms” with the help of thin partitions and  2. the popularity of fabulous shoes and sneakers for men and women alike. Don’t hide those bad boys under boot-cut cuffs! Show them off!

In the summertime, a nice set of rolled cuffs is also a great way to keep cool while out on the street or warm up again once you get into a chilly air conditioned office or movie theater. Viva La French Roll!
