New York Fashion Week: Oscar de la Renta

February 16th, 2012 -

New York Fashion Week is in full swing, with designers showcasing their upcoming lines on a daily and nightly basis. Many of these fashion designers are featuring surprisingly accessible fashion trends. Even many of the most elegant designs still appear to be ensembles that you could wear, albeit with some tweaking. New York Fashion Week

However, some, like Oscar de la Renta’s collection, are perfect as presented to the public. This collection consists of delicate, feminine silhouettes that are designed to make you feel like a true lady. Many of the pieces look as though they were inspired by Betty Draper’s party dress wardrobe; the others are clearly designed for the Red Carpet. All of them are exquisite.

These designs are simply stunning; they unabashedly embrace classic feminine styles, and there is something to be said to that. Once I figure out the best way to become a millionaire, I will buy exclusively from this collection.

David Beckham Released H&M Clothing Line

February 3rd, 2012 -

Not the first celebrity to collaborate with fashion giant H&M and certainly not the last, David Beckham is launching his new line for the store called Bodywear, which will be a line of underwear, comfy t-shirts and pajama pants for men. All priced at usual, low H&M prices.

I think that the major reason for this release is probably to have great press release photos of David Beckham half naked to entice more women to come into the store to shop in general. And maybe pick up their boyfriends a thing or two from the line, hoping it will transform them into Beckham or something.

Either way, it’s a bit of a “dull” line being that it’s all basics, but for men, I guess that’s all they really need. I can’t wait for the next time Madonna comes around to design a few things again because that H&M line was hot!

Noir HairStyles

January 27th, 2012 -

When you are getting ready for a Noir party, you need to have the appropriate ensemble, which includes everything from accessories to hair style.  fashion

You want to wear elegant, but simple jewelry; dangling chandelier earrings or simple stud earrings are your best options. If you wear a bracelet or necklace, wear one made from sterling silver. Paint your nails and your lips red to accentuate the elegance of your hands and to draw attention to your mouth.

Your hairdo is a fun way of expressing the time period of the event; if you have short hair, put into a ‘20s bob. If you have long hair, put it into a fake bob by loosely curling the hair that frames your face and tucking the ends of your hair under its body and pinning it close to your neck; doing this will give you a temporary bob. Use a gentle, non-aerosol hairspray to hold your hair in place without making it sticky and stiff.

If you want to create loose ‘40s barrel curls, use either hot rollers or a 1 ½ inch curling iron. Either will curl and set your hair in the perfect style. Flip your hair over and run your fingers through it to loosen the curls and add volume and then set with a non-aerosol, gentle hairspray.

The appropriate noir look, which includes accessories and hairstyle, will give the confidence to enjoy the themed party.

What to Wear For the SOPA Blackout!

January 18th, 2012 -

The internet is making major moves to blackout sites to protest the passing of the SOPA bill. And while that in itself is really exciting, we thought you could make the day even more fun by getting into the cause with fashion. Because think of it this way, if SOPA passes, you may not have access to many of your favorite fashion sites because the bill may say they are pro-piracy, even if they are just comprised of user created content. And that would be a sad day for the fashionistas in us all.

So if you want to let the world know you are supporting the blackout, you can do so with some creative ideas. The first and easiest is to wear all black for the day. I’m sure we all have a great pair of black slacks, pumps, and a black blouse. You can let people know that you are visually supporting the blackout by blacking out your own wardrobe!

You can also put together that amazing outfit you were inspired to create from that YouTube video you loved or that user submitted fashion site. You can let people know that you found the inspiration from online and that if SOPA passes, your wardrobe just won’t be as amazing because you won’t be allowed access to these kinds of content.

The Chic, Cozy Comfort of Corduroy

December 16th, 2011 -

Corduroy is very “in” this season, but for many of us, corduroy has never been “out”. Corduroy has been in my life for a long time; both in the form of a children’s book about a teddy bear with corduroy overalls, who is just looking for love and in clothing such as pants, skirts, and jumpers. Corduroy

Although corduroy pants are getting a lot of attention this season, as mentioned above, corduroy comes in many different forms and styles. Corduroy’s versatility makes it the perfect clothing for whatever mood you are in. It is an incredibly comfortable fabric and grows softer with each wearing. Corduroy pants are available in all the popular  pant styles, such as flair, straight-leg, skinny, and boot-cut designs. And, if you think that corduroy jumpers and skirts are only appropriate for little girls, you are mistaken.   come in a variety of different lengths and colors and are the perfect stylish accessory for looking fashionable and feeling warm during the winter months. And, if corduroy is properly cared for, it may last you for several years.

Victoria’s Secret has a surprisingly wide selection of well made corduroy that is available in a variety of styles and colors. If you are looking to get a better sense of how to accessorize and style corduroy, check out the company’s website or catalogue. If Victoria’s Secret is out of price range or comfort zone, check out the corduroy collections of Old Navy or even dELiA’s.

The Missoni Collection

September 16th, 2011 -

Missoni released its first department store line this week through Target. The instantaneous pandemonium resulted in Target’s website crashing, grown women behaving like hyenas fighting over zebra meat, and the store selling out in some stores within the first day. Fashion

The collection features a wide array of items including men, women, and children’s clothing, furniture, luggage house ware, and electronic accessories, all of which are available in Missoni’s signature mix and match patterns, rich colors, and distinctive textures.

Missoni products are great for fall weather; they incorporate vibrant earth colors of fall with hints of colors of author seasons, such as sea blue of summer, and Easter egg purple of spring. The clothing selection ranges from outerwear to underwear and includes fashionable accessories such as hats, gloves, stockings, and handbags. These pieces are made from either full pattern fabrics or fabrics with solid block colors that feature pattern accents.

This is a limited edition offer; it began on September 13th and ends on October 22nd.  Certain items are already listed as out of stock, so if you want to shop for Missoni products that are available for great prices, head to a Target store or visit www.Target.com before the line is completely sold out!

I Swear By My Maybelline Stiletto Line

August 10th, 2011 -

I’m a fan of liquid eyeliner and a great mascara. I’m lucky to be blessed with decent eyelashes, thick enough but always wished they were a little bit longer and bolder.  When your ex-boyfriend has nicer eyelashes than you do, kinda brings down a gal’s self esteem. But anyway, eyeliner and mascara are my every day staple. I could wake up with a fresh face and put nothing else on except for those two and feel like I’m ready to conquer the day.

I cannot live with my Maybelline Stiletto eyeliner and mascara. Now, before you try to look around and find where the Maybelline employee is hiding that’s giving me my royalty checks, I’ll let you know that my love for this stuff goes well beyond product promotion. It’s called finding the nectar of the Gods. Ok, that may be a bit over the top.

Let’s start with the eyeliner. First of all, the applicator is great. I have a lot of control of how thick or thin I want my eyeliner and often my preference is as fleeting as the wind. It also dries ridiculously fast and comes out heavy enough that i don’t have this half-assed smear on my eyelid. It’s very easy to take off with water, which is the only downside if your eye gets moist for any reason (often in my case because of using eyedrops for my contacts).

The mascara, on the other hand, is ridiculous hard to get off, but that means it’s lasting my whole day, which can sometimes mean more than 12 hours. But because it’s so hard to remove, if you say, accidentally blink too soon and get mascara lines just under your eye, I wish you luck getting them off. I’ve scrubbed until I’ve fully exfoliated trying to remove mascara that got on my skin. Still, no clumping and really easy to apply multiple layers with.

I know how often cosmetic companies like to discontinue and start over with new lines. If Maybelline ever gets rid of their Stiletto line I will track down the person whose bright idea it was and make their life a living hell. Just saying.

Fall Styles Already in Stores

August 3rd, 2011 -

It’s only August 3rd but fall styles are showing up everywhere and being promoted with sales. I recently took a trip to a local H&M to find a lot of heavier fabrics and fall colors in stock. It’s the perfect time to get your ensemble ready for after Labor Day. Here’s a look at some major trends that have been popping up, ready to fly off the shelves:

  • Orange. Yes, it was big already this spring and fall, but that was brighter iterations of it. For the fall, it’s more a pumpkin orange and it’s everywhere. A wool orange skirt on orange blazer would be the perfect addition to your outfit and make you stand out. Pair it with less bold colors and make it the only orange piece in the outfit so you don’t look like a big pumpkin.
  • Knit dresses. Knit, comfy dresses with simple designs and  shape are really in and popping up everywhere. You can be comfortable and look feminine too and that’s definitely the point of these designs.
  • Lace. Big last fall and making a comeback in very feminine, flirty ways. Think more of a soft look, not sexy lingerie lace but pink and white lace with a more modest feel.
  • Ruffles. Ruffle dresses, ruffle tops, even shoes with ruffles. It’s everywhere as an extra bit of pizzazz. Some women don’t like the look but if you like trying new and bolder things, go for it!

Summer Skin Tips

July 15th, 2011 -

fashionSummer means you’re outside, showing off, flirting around, having fun. You don’t want to be held back and you want to look your best, while at the beach, the rooftops, or the office. Here are a few tips on how to keep your skin looking its best.

Don’t go fake tanning. Natural tans have contours and lines that make you look like you’ve been in the sun. Fake tans look flat and processed. It’s like the difference between organic and hormone fed food.

There are a few tanning powders and creams, but nothing beats the look of a natural tan. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays. As long as you stay safe in the sun, it’s okay to get away without wearing sunscreen here and there. But if you do it too often, by the time you’re in your late thirties you’ll begin to see the effects of unprotected skin: wrinkles, redness and dryness, not to mention an enhanced risk of melanoma.

So be careful in the sun, and then relax. If you have the time, exfoliate. And wear your skin proudly. You are young and beautiful as long as you feel so.

LEARN TO PLAN AHEAD

February 26th, 2011 -

One of the main causes of wrinkles, headaches and illnesses is stress which is usually brought about by poor planning and sudden rush decisions.  People should always plan ahead what they need to accomplish for the day, make room for adjustments in case there are any untoward incidents or make provisions for emergencies, and more importantly, to stick to the plan or schedule no matter what happens.  Deviating from an established plans gives a clear headache because we suddenly become unprepared for the resulting consequences simply because it is not what we planned about.  Hence, next time, we should stick our original plans and not alter it even if there may be a lot of convincing done by other persons to deviate from it.  We can only preserve our beauty if we do our part on preserving it and there would be no need for these moisturizers and creams to make our skin look healthy, smooth and fresh. Just learn to plan ahead and avoid the stress.
