Urban Decay “Fun” Eyeshadow Palette Review

January 24th, 2012 -

It’s no secret that I have a big ol’ yen for Urban Decay products. It’s two-fold: their colors are insanely cool and unique and their makeup has serious staying power.  I have more experience with their eyeshadow over anything else because their palettes are just great. So when they had a sale recently on their  Feminine, Dangerous and Fun palettes at their officially website, I jumped on scoring the Fun one for only $19 (this one is still on sale, by the way, so don’t pass up on that opportunity!).

The fun palette, as pictured,  is their brighter, technicolored palette of choice for those not afraid to be bold. I used to shy away from bright eyeshadows but this palette has really let me embrace them.  These colors are not for the faint of heart; the gold is GOLD and will make you look like your eyelids were touched by King Midas himself. The blue, purple and fuchsia are great colors that come on bright but can be easily toned down if need be. My biggest gripe is the silver eyeshadow, which seems to be not much more than a lot of glitter that gets EVERYWHERE. I avoid it for the most part unless I dip my brush in water first so that the sparkles stick together a bit better.

The palette comes with small version of their 24/7 eyeliner pencil in Oil Slick, a really fun black liner with a bit of sparkle. It’s really easy to apply and while I’m typically a fan of liquid liners, I’ve really taken to the softness and ease of this pencil.

If you shop through their site you also get a mini version of their Eyeshadow Primer Potion, which really, really works. I used to use the old trick of placing foundation on my eyelids before applying, but this primer does the job even better. It’s convinced me to go out and pick up a full bottle.

It’s a great complete set to give you a, well, fun look! It’s my go to most days, whether just heading to the office or going out on the weekend.

I Swear By My Maybelline Stiletto Line

August 10th, 2011 -

I’m a fan of liquid eyeliner and a great mascara. I’m lucky to be blessed with decent eyelashes, thick enough but always wished they were a little bit longer and bolder.  When your ex-boyfriend has nicer eyelashes than you do, kinda brings down a gal’s self esteem. But anyway, eyeliner and mascara are my every day staple. I could wake up with a fresh face and put nothing else on except for those two and feel like I’m ready to conquer the day.

I cannot live with my Maybelline Stiletto eyeliner and mascara. Now, before you try to look around and find where the Maybelline employee is hiding that’s giving me my royalty checks, I’ll let you know that my love for this stuff goes well beyond product promotion. It’s called finding the nectar of the Gods. Ok, that may be a bit over the top.

Let’s start with the eyeliner. First of all, the applicator is great. I have a lot of control of how thick or thin I want my eyeliner and often my preference is as fleeting as the wind. It also dries ridiculously fast and comes out heavy enough that i don’t have this half-assed smear on my eyelid. It’s very easy to take off with water, which is the only downside if your eye gets moist for any reason (often in my case because of using eyedrops for my contacts).

The mascara, on the other hand, is ridiculous hard to get off, but that means it’s lasting my whole day, which can sometimes mean more than 12 hours. But because it’s so hard to remove, if you say, accidentally blink too soon and get mascara lines just under your eye, I wish you luck getting them off. I’ve scrubbed until I’ve fully exfoliated trying to remove mascara that got on my skin. Still, no clumping and really easy to apply multiple layers with.

I know how often cosmetic companies like to discontinue and start over with new lines. If Maybelline ever gets rid of their Stiletto line I will track down the person whose bright idea it was and make their life a living hell. Just saying.

The Fine Art of Natural Looking Makeup

June 29th, 2011 -

Natural is in, especially for the summer season. Caking on all that dark lipstick and over done eye shadow is definitely going to get you some strange looks. You want to go natural and yet still have the coverage that makeup gives you. There’s a few key things to achieving this look.

  • Foundation: foundation is key.  You want a foundation with minimal coverage, or medium at most. Anything more than that is going to completely take away from the look.  Blending in is always important, as we all know. Sponges are your friend!
  • Nude lipstick: A nude color lipstick will give you sheen and shine, but won’t overpower your face. Try a few different nudes. If you absolutely NEED some color (we know how that is) try a very light pink.
  • Minimalist Eye Makeup:  Mascara is fine, but don’t use overly dark or thick mascara. For eye shadow, stick to light colors or even a bronze to give you a real glow.
  • Nude blush: A nude color blush will act much like the lipstick. Enough to give you a glow, not too much that your cheeks look too flush. If you want something a little darker to change up for night time, pick a bronze or  gold blush.

Natural looking makeup can make you look fantastic without looking like you tried too hard. Test out some ideas and products and see how great you look without all those extra layers of color!

LEARN TO PLAN AHEAD

February 26th, 2011 -

One of the main causes of wrinkles, headaches and illnesses is stress which is usually brought about by poor planning and sudden rush decisions.  People should always plan ahead what they need to accomplish for the day, make room for adjustments in case there are any untoward incidents or make provisions for emergencies, and more importantly, to stick to the plan or schedule no matter what happens.  Deviating from an established plans gives a clear headache because we suddenly become unprepared for the resulting consequences simply because it is not what we planned about.  Hence, next time, we should stick our original plans and not alter it even if there may be a lot of convincing done by other persons to deviate from it.  We can only preserve our beauty if we do our part on preserving it and there would be no need for these moisturizers and creams to make our skin look healthy, smooth and fresh. Just learn to plan ahead and avoid the stress.

WHY DO PEOPLE USE FACE MASKS

February 25th, 2011 -

If we go to the store, we can see that some of the beauty products being sold are face masks.  But what are they exactly and for what purpose are they being used? Face masks rejuvenate the skin.  They remove those blemishes and acts as a cleanser by penetrating deep into those pores. For those with oily skin, it operates as a moisturizer. It actually helps brighten the skin that once it is removed, the wearer will really feel rejuvenated by it with a new feeling of freshness.  Aside from its aesthetic benefits, it is also relaxes our mental faculties in a way. However, it should be remembered that face masks have to be placed for only 15-20 minutes.  If it stays too long, instead of relaxing the skin, it may stretch it too much, making it grow weary and tired.  In the end,  we may end up having dry skin and facial wrinkles.

THE CUCUMBER WAY

February 22nd, 2011 -

We do not need a trip to the dermatologist or to any other doctor to restore the natural beauty of our skin and our bodies.  Sometimes, we just need to open the refrigerator door and there it is right in front of us, the solution to fairer and healthier skin: the cucumber.  Though widely known as a food ingested with salads, cucumbers are knows to be used in promoting healthier skin.  People make cucumber masks to reduce the puffiness around their eyes as it relaxes and eases the tensions away.  Basically, if all we want is happy and healthy skin, all we need to do is to savour the medicinal properties of the cucumber, minus the salt and pepper of course. If it can be applied to our faces, it can also serve as perfect cucumber juice to infuse that fresh feeling into our system. So if we need healthy skin, let’s do it the cucumber way!

Jared Doppeleto

October 12th, 2010 -

“Oh look, it’s Jared Leto. Hey Jared Leto. I see you’ve gone back to an old look — OMG.”

So yeah, that’s not Jared Leto. A Jared Leto fan — a female Jared Leto fan, mind you — released the video below a few days ago of herself applying makeup to look like Jared Leto. The resemblance is uncanny. Nay, more than uncanny. It’s whatever the word is that conveys a stronger “OMG” than uncanny.

Clearly this girl could be making bank doing Halloween makeup, and she’ll probably end up as some huge Hollywood makeup artist for Tim Burton or Lady Gaga or something.

Here’s the real Jared, btw.

Hold the Phone! 14-Year-Old Gets Face Tat

August 26th, 2010 -

A woman in England recently allowed her 14-year-old daughter to have make-up tattooed onto her face (you can tell how insane this is by my use of italics).

Sophie Watson, who’s already won a number of beauty pageants and wants to be an actress and singer, had eyeliner, lip liner, a fake beauty mark, and her eyebrows tattooed with makeup. The effect is said to last up to five years.

Well that’s not so bad. Five years will just fly by. Still though, it seems a bit extreme (by a bit I mean extremely) — the procedure took about seven hours and cost £1,200 (about $1,900). Watson needed parental consent, which her mother was happy to give.

So far the reactions have been pretty unfavorable, with most people arguing that allowing a child to have something like this done lets her think it’s okay to not accept herself the way she is.
