February, 14th – 16th, Its Happening!!!!

February 7th, 2011 -

The “Manchester of the East” Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India is hosting the DIGJAM Vibrant Fashion Week Season 2. It coincides with the Valentine’s day. India already boasts the Lakme Fashion Week and India Fashion Week.

In this event an effort will be made to portray the traditional Indian fashion so that the designers attending the show can pick them up and use it in their themes. The textile industry in Gujarat dates back to the 1860′s the days of British Occupation of India. In 1905, Ahmedabad alone had about 33 textile mills. Fashion helps sell the products from the textile industry, thus it only makes sense to have Fashion show hosted in Ahmedabad.

The Season 1 of the DIGJAM Vibrant Fashion Week was held last year in Ahmedabad with various top models in India and designers. Some of them included Zarin Khan, Sophie Chaudhari, Amruta Patki, etc. New talent Patan Patola was also promoted last year in this forum. This event acts as a platform for traders, partners, alliances, and fashion media to exchange views and their work.

This year designers such as Paras & Shalini Sulakshana Monga, Abhi & Rahul, Aslam Khan Pradeep Agarwal, Arshi Jamal, etc are expected to be present.

What do I wear this Spring?

February 6th, 2011 -

It is that time of the year when the birds are chirping and the flowers are blossoming. It is also that time of the year when students want to wear clothes for their springbreak and women professionals want to dress colorful for the occasion.

What does one wear? Well it is mostly denim combination that is preferred during this time. Elle provides a range of products for the women who like to dress for the season.

Denim is defined as a cloth made out of coarse cotton that has a twill weave. It is most commonly available in most of the fashion outlets. Most common form of denims are jeans pants and shirts. They are very comfortable to wear and experience.

They give men a rugged look. There are various types of denim pants such as slim-fit, baggy fit, etc. Elle has fashionable denim dresses as shown in the picture here. Their motto seems to be if it is in fashion we are into it.

You should try it out….

Fashion US: Anna Sui Steps Up for the Garment District

June 21st, 2010 -

At 7th Avenue and 39th Street in Manhattan there is a giant needle threaded through the hole of a button. I passed it for years when running errands in midtown for a casting director’s office before connecting its significance to the important historic and commercial district nearby: the Garment District.

Today New York has more design houses than any other city in the world, and have relied on the Garment District for more than a century as a one-stop-shop for accessories, fine fabrics, cheap fabrics, and sewing services. But with new zoning laws, as well as job loss in the poor economy and an overall homogenization of culture, many businesses have closed forever, and garment sellers have moved to other, more affordable cities.

Famous fashionistas and fashionistos like Diane von Furstenberg, Michael Kors, and Nanette Lepore have all stepped forward to protect this midtown stretch between 5th and 9th Avenues and 34th to 42nd Streets from high rents, developers, yuppy condos, and worse.

Anna Sui, oh she of the lovely Baby Doll dress, has been campaigning hard on behalf of the Garment District since 2008. Efforts have included a basic heather gray t-shirt with simple white serif font in all caps urging SAVE THE GARMENT DISTRICT.

Most recently, Anna Sui led a study with photos, 3D images, and interviews of fashion icons to document exactly how the district has diminished in the last several years.

What Sells in Brazil

June 8th, 2010 -

Gisele Bundchen is the world’s top earning model. She was discovered in one of the small farms in Southern Brazil that was colonized mostly by Germans and Italians. Today in Rio Grande do Sul and two other states, more than 70% of the world’s models are found.  Model hunters look for the same hybrid that will launch the next superstar.

Although Brazil has a majority of nonwhites, the tall, fair, and light eyed mix is the best sell to runways abroad.  There is less racial segregation in the mainstream than there was 20 years ago, largely thanks to a booming Brazilian economy and a closing economic gap, yet still white girls are chosen more often for their looks. There are often discrimination reports in Sao Paolo about the lack of black and native girls picked to model, but scouts are sure of what sells.

Many of these girls are in high school or are even younger when they are chosen. If they don’t move to the city, they often stay with their families and work in the fields. Model scouts who wait for them to grow up caution against the perils of the sun by using sunscreen, and the tendency towards becoming overweight by eating fruits and vegetables.

Sophistication Station

June 2nd, 2010 -

The aughties were all about fun, love, and life. Today, the fashion trends are returning towards more classical, sophisticated styles. It’s a shift similar from the flower children of the 60′s towards the disco dancing of the 70′s. I’m not saying that the entire paradigm has changed, just that it’s clad a bit differently.

Because the decade is still young, you can get away with a lot of of last year’s remnants. These include dressing up, with a little bit of flair to dress it back down.  For example a printed dress with an army jacket is a great way to make a statement. Play it with some black heels and some darker shades of eye shadow and nail polish. Browns like coffee, caramel, and even shades of taupe are a great way to impress on your fingernails or as a matte to give your cheeks added definition. Smokey gray is another hot color to make your style stand out.

A hat is another way you can add some class to your outfit. Cocktail hats reminiscent of 20′s flappers are best worn with a slight tilt. Hats that differ from your face shape complement your face the best.

Flowetry in Motion

May 17th, 2010 -

Chanel made a big 1970s-style entrance this year at their resort show in Saint-Tropez with a line of flowing chiffon tunics, gingham blouses, camel mini skirts, and lacey swimwear inspired by looks made popular 40 years ago. Other sartorial highlights included sheer, delicate, flower print maxi gowns worn with little flat gold sandals, along with white suits and ankle-length flowy pants.

The show presented a curious reversal with many of the stars and fabulous audience members wearing clothes that were tighter and more revealing than the models, who breezed down the runway barefoot and dressed in long see-through caftans, ruffley silk suits, and patchwork shirts. One memorable turn on the runway ended with model Georgia Jagger (daughter of Mick) riding in on the back of a motorcycle.

Chanel’s current look may have been inspired by Coco Chanel’s personal history in tropical locations and the laidback vibe of Saint-Tropez itself. Other recent Chanel shows have also taken place in landmarks from Coco’s past like Venice and Shanghai. And creative director and fashion god Karl Lagerfeld also attributes part of his style legacy to his younger days spent on the relaxed beaches of the Riviera.

With Chanel’s embrace of roomy retro styles, could this signal a new wave of comfy, flowing fasion?

Flarin’ Up

April 15th, 2010 -

Skinnies are so 00′s. Today it’s all about the flare. Bringing back the hippie movement with a touch of class, flares are hot for summer. Designer Derek Lam says “That kind of exaggerated proportion looks right, right now.” Lammy is on to something – it makes your leg look longer. There are two main types of flare: the over the shoe, and the above the ankle. Think the latter for summer, and the former for fall.

You can wear them in denim, flannel or plaid, any way you decide to wear the flare, these pants are a return to a classic look.  You can wear them with any top, but if you really want to make a statement, think leopard spots, and a Diane Keaton type wide brimmed hat. Wear a small bag with a long strap to enhance the length of your flared leg.

Suits are In This Spring

April 8th, 2010 -

Suits have long been a staple in men’s fashion. But today, the suit is becoming more affordable and more universal – not just a wear for the office. Today’s suits combine synthetic fabrics to achieve a technologically adherent look for a slim price.

There are also more traditional fabrics that are getting a makeover in the suit category. Plaid, linen and wool are all trendy materials that are being worn among the chic circles of young men around the country.

This trend toward classic sartorial styles is continuing abroad too. In Seoul, South Korea, looking dapper is commonplace. Among the trenchcoats, sweater vests, blazers and lightweight jackets are more cosmopolitan chic styles.  Men here wear suits as if they were t-shirts.

But while the weather’s heating up, you may not want to go so formal. For those who feel casual most of the time, another growing trend is wearing a necktie or bowtie with jeans, work boots and crumpled button down. Pierrepoint Hicks is becoming especially well known for his multi-colored bowties.

Cheap suits are not what they once were; today the cheap suit is a fashion staple for most men. Want a cheap suit? Try Macy’s, Uniqlo, and Topman.

Wear What You Read

March 25th, 2010 -

If you want to come off as inspired and intelligent, without looking like a nerd or a tool, here are a few sites that have caught my attention.

Out of Print clothing sells t-shirts with first edition covers of your favorite books, and for each sold shirt, a book is donated to an African town. They have classics like “Moby Dick” and “Catcher in the Rye” and lesser known, but just as stylish, shirts such as “The Master and Margarita” and “Wisdom of the Heart.”

Literary Rags is another literary clothing company. This site features t-shirts with faces of your favorite poets, philosophers, novelists and dramatists on the front and a cool quote on the back. Their wide range of authors also draws a monthly deal for $15 out of the bunch; otherwise the shirts run $22 a pop.

Of course, the first thing I did was buy my favorite author, Henry Miller. His quote is “The aim of life is to live, and to live means to be aware, Joyously, drunkenly, serenely, divinely aware.” I think that’s pretty applicable, especially to a blog about fashion.
