A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

February 18th, 2011 -

Individuals are required to get at least eight hours of sleep every day.  However, some tend to abuse their bodies and prefer taking a short and quick catnap.  Unknown to them, they slowly wear down their bodies which later becomes manifest when eye bags set in or those weary tired faces begin to show those creases and facial lines.

Our bodies are not machines, and even though we have the strength to get up in the morning after having only slept a little, like automobiles, our physique is being subjected to the usual wear and tear.  This is why some people tend to look older than what they actually are.   Moreover, not getting enough sleep makes a person cranky in the morning and would eventually lead to what would be the start of a stressful day. So give our bodies that much needed rest because it deserves it .  A well-rested mind and body promotes a healthy one.

Beauty is stress free!

February 17th, 2011 -

What is the secret to one’s youthful looks?  We see some women walking around who are even younger than they look.  We can easily distinguish those who have resorted to cosmetic surgery or botox treatments. But what about those who can easily fool other people with their true age and who appear to have aged quite beautifully.

It is of no secret that a stressful life can bring about a lot of painful consequences.  However, learning to live a happy life, not worrying too much about things can ease those creases and wrinkles in our bodies. Basically, all we have to do is live and savor each day, not lose sleep over petty things.  Being stress-free is essentially the key to preserve one’s beauty.  As long as we are happy and content with the way things are done, then stress cannot even find its way to our minds and bodies. So go out, live, and enjoy!

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Give Me Your Hair

August 27th, 2010 -

My hair has been through a lot over the years. It’s very curly naturally, and I’ve been rebelling against the kinks for as long as I can remember. When I was in 8th grade my mom let me get it relaxed, but the solution my hairdresser used was too strong, and as a result, a chunk of my hair has never grown in the same. When I was a freshman I cut it all off and began straightening it regularly. It hasn’t been long since; I’ve had a faux hawk, a pixie, a bob, you name it. Senior year I tried growing it out again, because I wanted to be able to wear it without straightening it all the time, and things were going great until my boyfriend and I broke up and, in an idiotic act of defiance against my ex, who loved that my hair was getting longer, I chopped it off again.

I’m back in the process of growing it out again, and, as anyone who’s tried to go from short to long again knows, it’s a pain.

A few weeks ago Cosmo ran an article on how to grow long hair. Here are their tips:

  1. Rub and Scrub. You wouldn’t just stick your face under a spout to clean it, would you? Similarly, your scalp needs to be touched. “New hair has trouble sprouting through a layer of dirt, oil, and old skin cells,” says Kingsley, who suggests massaging your scalp vigorously with a scalp brush or the pads of your fingers for two minutes preshower. See how to give your roots a megaboost.
  2. Pamper hair. Look for shampoos and conditioners that contain moisturizing shea butter or avocado oil. They keep strands saturated — key for growth since brittle, splitting strands break off before they can get long, says San Francisco derm Paradi Mirmirani. Check out how to party-proof your curls.
  3. Rethink Your Styling Routine. Heat (from appliances) and friction (from brushes) can damage hair’s protective covering, or cuticle, making strands susceptible to snapping off. Detangle with only a wide-tooth comb, use heat-shielding sprays prestyling, and declare Sunday a lazy-do day. “Laying off the blow-dryer or iron once a week can help,” Serratore says. For easy waves, braid wet hair; unravel when it’s dry. Watch this video to get loose, sexy waves.

Another tip I’ve always heard is to regularly trim your hair. Many think this is an old wives’ tale, understandably, because it makes no sense that cutting hair off would make it grow faster. This is true, but not the reason. When you trim your hair you get rid of dead ends, which are more likely to break off, and split ends, which are more likely to continue splitting until they hit the root. Certain vitamins are also supposed to be good for hair growth, so try foods with vitamin A (dairy products, fish, spinach, apricots), vitamin B (meat, fish, bananas, leafy green veggies), vitamin C (citrus, melon, tomatoes and potatoes) and vitamin E (nuts, broccoli, whole grains).

The All-Important Pants Roll

The All-Important Pants RollIn 2nd  grade it was all about pegging one’s pants properly. In the ‘80s, it was called the “French roll.” Then later, we learned about rolling pants as a way of communicating whether one was interested in buying or selling drugs in the urban environment.

Now the high-water look is back, not for classroom popularity or less-than-legal purchases, but for high fashion! This masculine shabby chic style is currently being sported by trendsetting ankles from Silverlake in LA to Bushwick in NYC.

Style arbiter Jim Moore, GQ’s creative director, urges that the roll should look somewhat unintentional. “Consider how Johnny Depp might roll his pants.”

The look is likely attributable to  1. the ongoing style romance with a slightly impoverished look, in which one imitates the togs of an artist squatting in a loft in an abandoned factory and separated into different “rooms” with the help of thin partitions and  2. the popularity of fabulous shoes and sneakers for men and women alike. Don’t hide those bad boys under boot-cut cuffs! Show them off!

In the summertime, a nice set of rolled cuffs is also a great way to keep cool while out on the street or warm up again once you get into a chilly air conditioned office or movie theater. Viva La French Roll!

Shorts, Shorts, Shorts!

June 28th, 2010 -

It’s officially summertime, and you know what that means. It’s hot. If you are like the rest of us, you wear shorts during the summer. Here are some ideas for how to keep cool and show off your legs.

Leather: black shorts with studs on them are faux biker, and look really good.

Tie-waist: like a skirt, but not really, you won’t need  a belt with these cute ties, and they come in a variety of lengths and styles.

Denim: more relaxed, it doesn’t mean that you can’t dress these shorts up. Pair with a white top and designer shoes for women, perhaps gladiator heels, for a night out on the town.

Ethnic prints: tribal patterns on denim and batik shorts are funky and fun.

Evening: Sequins and satin are way classy and can even be worn to work.

Hot pants: a shorter short, these come in a variety of styles and colors. With a high waist, you can get creative with the different kinds out there.

There you have it, we’ve pretty much run the shorts gamut. Pair some shorts with Ed Hardy bags and designer shoes for women and you have an outfit that is ready to roar.

Stripe Me!

June 17th, 2010 -

Stripes: black and white bands up and down, sideways, horizontal, criss-crossed, targets, whatever – simple patterns are in.

It doesn’t matter if they’re worn on t-shirts, skirts, blouses, button-downs, v-necks, or if it’s simply a white shirt and black pants. Black and white stripes, the zebra look, is a fairly conservative style, and will be sure to score you points with any soccer crowd. It’s not expensive to assemble either.

White is perfect for the summertime, and the powerful darker shades balance the absence of color so that you can get away with wearing the outfit at night or during the day. More importantly, this continues our spring and summertime obsession with minimalism and simplicity.

Once you have the basic idea in mind you cant take it anywhere – particularly hot are lingerie styles – think black bra with white top, or a side bearing tank, and military, where you can don a light pant and pair it with a striped shirt.

Best of all, this style calls for ease and grace, so you can’t try too hard or mess that up. It’s about being comfortable and looking good. So go ahead and get creative with less.

What Sells in Brazil

June 8th, 2010 -

Gisele Bundchen is the world’s top earning model. She was discovered in one of the small farms in Southern Brazil that was colonized mostly by Germans and Italians. Today in Rio Grande do Sul and two other states, more than 70% of the world’s models are found.  Model hunters look for the same hybrid that will launch the next superstar.

Although Brazil has a majority of nonwhites, the tall, fair, and light eyed mix is the best sell to runways abroad.  There is less racial segregation in the mainstream than there was 20 years ago, largely thanks to a booming Brazilian economy and a closing economic gap, yet still white girls are chosen more often for their looks. There are often discrimination reports in Sao Paolo about the lack of black and native girls picked to model, but scouts are sure of what sells.

Many of these girls are in high school or are even younger when they are chosen. If they don’t move to the city, they often stay with their families and work in the fields. Model scouts who wait for them to grow up caution against the perils of the sun by using sunscreen, and the tendency towards becoming overweight by eating fruits and vegetables.

Flarin’ Up

April 15th, 2010 -

Skinnies are so 00′s. Today it’s all about the flare. Bringing back the hippie movement with a touch of class, flares are hot for summer. Designer Derek Lam says “That kind of exaggerated proportion looks right, right now.” Lammy is on to something – it makes your leg look longer. There are two main types of flare: the over the shoe, and the above the ankle. Think the latter for summer, and the former for fall.

You can wear them in denim, flannel or plaid, any way you decide to wear the flare, these pants are a return to a classic look.  You can wear them with any top, but if you really want to make a statement, think leopard spots, and a Diane Keaton type wide brimmed hat. Wear a small bag with a long strap to enhance the length of your flared leg.

Jeggings are Hip This Spring

February 24th, 2010 -

Leggings you’ve known about for a while. You can match them with pretty much anything and look good. But this spring a new style has emerged: jeggings.

These are leggings that are made to look like jeans but they’re really a hybrid between the two. Jeggings have an elastic band and are skintight,  are cotton, polyester, and spandex but they look like skintight jeans.

Because they’re denim, you don’t have to cover your butt, but a cardigan, long sweater or tanktop will still look nice with jeggings. Try to get a dark pair because they’re usually more flattering that way, but hey, if jeggings don’t suit your specific body type, don’t worry! There are different fashions for everyone.

But if you dig the style, throw on some chunky heels, a long sweater and a scarf. Think big bags and you can go anywhere with your jeggings. Usually fashions emerge out of necessity, and since skinny jeans have only been getting skinnier and leggings are too casual, jegggings emerge as a great compromise – sexy enough to wear out, classy enough to wear to work!
